There are cricketers, and then there is Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar. Born on this date in 1973 in Mumbai, the man the world calls the ‘Little Master’ turns 53 today, and the reverence surrounding his name has not dimmed by a single watt. In a country where cricket is not merely a sport but a shared religion, Tendulkar was its most enduring deity.
Tendulkar made his international debut at just 16, stepping onto a Test field in Karachi against Pakistan in November 1989, and went on to accumulate records that may never be broken. He is the only cricketer in history to score 100 international centuries: 51 in Tests and 49 in ODIs, and the all-time leading run-scorer in both formats combined, with over 34,000 international runs to his name.
Tendulkar played 200 Test matches, a figure that itself stands as a monument to endurance and commitment. In 2013, when he finally walked off the field at Wankhede Stadium after his farewell Test, a nation wept in collective silence.
His honours reflect the scale of his standing. Tendulkar was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 2014, the first sportsperson to receive India's highest civilian honour, and had previously been conferred the Arjuna Award, the Khel Ratna, and the Padma Vibhushan. The ICC inducted him into the Cricket Hall of Fame the same year he retired.
Off the pitch, Brand Tendulkar was as formidable as the batsman himself. His very first television appearance came in 1989 with a Johnson & Johnson Band-Aid commercial in which he played with local children, perfectly capturing the boy-next-door warmth that would define his public image for decades. That same year, he appeared alongside then-India captain Kapil Dev in a Boost advertisement, delivering the line "Boost is the secret of my energy," a tagline that lodged itself permanently in the Indian consciousness. The Boost partnership stretched across a remarkable 25 years, with Tendulkar's association playing a pivotal role in establishing the brand as a household name.
Through the 1990s and 2000s, Pepsi used him brilliantly. A particularly beloved commercial from the 1996 World Cup season, built around the "Nothing Official About It" campaign, showed a mischievous Tendulkar at street cricket, smashing the windscreen of a Pepsi van before the vendor recognised him and offered him a bottle. Then came the iconic 1999 World Cup Pepsi spot featuring Shah Rukh Khan disguising himself as Tendulkar to sneak into the Lord's dressing room; this piece of advertising became cultural folklore.
Adidas built an entire campaign around him, with the "Impossible is Nothing" commercial narrating his life story in his own voice, widely regarded as one of the finest athlete endorsement films ever made in India. Airtel made him the face of its "Express Yourself" campaign, while Castrol aligned his passion for motorsports with its own brand identity.
But beyond the runs, the records, and the advertisements, what Sachin Tendulkar gave India was something harder to quantify: hope, consistency, and the quiet assurance that greatness was possible. On his birthday, that gift feels as vital as ever. Happy Birthday, Master Blaster!
