As veteran FMCG leader Sudhir Sitapati celebrated his birthday recently, it offers an opportunity to look back at a career spanning more than two decades across some of India’s most influential consumer businesses.

Sitapati recently concluded his nearly five-year stint as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Godrej Consumer Products Limited (GCPL), stepping down in August 2026. Aasif Malbari, who was Global CFO and President, Godrej Africa, succeeded him as MD and CEO.

His exit came only months after GCPL’s board had approved his reappointment for another five-year term beginning October 18, 2026. The proposed term was subsequently overtaken by his decision to move on from the company.

Sitapati joined GCPL in October 2021 after spending more than 22 years with Hindustan Unilever Limited, bringing with him extensive experience across brands, categories and international markets. At HUL, he worked across India, Europe, Southeast Asia and Africa and rose to become Executive Director – Foods and Refreshments.

His career at Unilever saw him work across categories ranging from foods and refreshments to skin cleansing, fabric cleaning and laundry. Over the years, Sitapati built a reputation as a marketer and business leader with a strong understanding of brand building, distribution and consumer behaviour.

When he moved to GCPL, the mandate was one of transformation. During his tenure, the company sharpened its portfolio and focused on strengthening its core categories while building new growth engines across markets.

Beyond the boardroom, Sitapati has also contributed to management thinking through his book, The CEO Factory, which examines the systems and practices behind building managers and businesses at Hindustan Unilever.

An alumnus of St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, and IIM Ahmedabad, Sitapati has also held industry leadership roles, including Chair of the CII FMCG Committee.

Across more than two decades in the consumer goods industry, his career has been defined by long-term brand building, organisational transformation and leadership across diverse markets.

As Sudhir Sitapati celebrated his birthday recently, the occasion also marks a moment to recognise a professional journey that has consistently remained at the intersection of brands, business and consumer understanding.
