Former UK Chancellor George Osborne has announced that he is joining OpenAI as Managing Director and Head of OpenAI for Countries, a role he will take up in London. In this position, Osborne will lead the OpenAI for Countries programme.
Sharing the update on X (formerly Twitter), Osborne said it was a privilege to be part of OpenAI and support its mission. He noted that the OpenAI for Countries initiative aims to help societies worldwide benefit from the opportunities created by advanced AI technology, adding that he is honoured to join the team.
He also reflected on his decision to make the career move, saying that after considering which company represents the most exciting and forward-looking work today, OpenAI stood out as the clear choice.

Commenting on the appointment, Chris Lehane, OpenAI’s Chief Global Affairs Officer, said that Osborne’s decision highlights a shared belief that AI is fast becoming critical global infrastructure. He added that the choices made now around how AI is developed, governed and deployed will influence economies and geopolitics for years ahead.
Lehane further said that with Osborne leading the initiative, OpenAI for Countries has the potential to deliver outcomes that benefit democratic AI development, governments and businesses adopting AI for public good, and nations seeking to make the most of the AI era.
Explaining the initiative, Lehane noted that OpenAI for Countries was launched in May with the aim of working closely with governments to ensure AI systems are built on democratic values and contribute to global prosperity and freedom. So far, OpenAI has engaged with more than 50 countries as part of this effort.
