National Press Day is being celebrated across India today, marking the critical role of a free and responsible press in upholding democracy. This day commemorates the establishment of the Press Council of India, which began its operations on November 16, 1966, as a self-regulatory body to safeguard the freedom of the press and maintain its ethical standards.

The Press Council of India (PCI) serves as a moral watchdog, ensuring that journalists adhere to the highest standards of professionalism while protecting them from external influences or threats. Its mandate includes striking a delicate balance between press freedom and accountability.

This year’s National Press Day theme, “Press Freedom for Democracy and Social Accountability,” underscores the importance of an independent press in promoting transparency, accountability, and civic engagement. Across the country, seminars, workshops, and panel discussions are being organized to reflect on the evolving challenges faced by the media, including misinformation, censorship, and the impact of technology on journalism.

Across the nation, leaders and politicians have extended their greetings to journalists, acknowledging their contributions to society.

Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, in a tweet, lauded the role of journalists in upholding truth and democratic values. He praised their dedication to public welfare and their contribution to the nation's progress through fair and transparent journalism.

Congress National President, Mallikarjun Kharge, joined the nation in conveying his best wishes on National Press Day through a tweet.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Dr. Mohan Yadav, also took to social media to express his appreciation for journalists. He recognized their role as vigilant guardians of democratic values and emphasized the importance of their unbiased and assertive reporting in strengthening democracy.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister, Bhupesh Baghel, highlighted the significance of freedom of expression as a cornerstone of Indian democracy. He extended his greetings to all members of the media fraternity on this occasion.

Prominent journalists and media experts have also weighed in on the role of the press in today’s rapidly changing media landscape.
