Nitish Kumar has resigned as Chief Minister of Bihar, ending a two-decade tenure in office during which he led the state through a period of economic growth.

Kumar submitted his resignation on 14 April 2026 after dissolving his cabinet following its final meeting in Patna. He is now set to move to the Rajya Sabha.

He shared on his official X handle, “We have done a lot of work for the people of Bihar. For so many years, we have continuously served the people. We had decided that we would now leave the post of Chief Minister, and therefore today, after the Cabinet meeting, I met the Hon’ble Governor and submitted my resignation. Now a new government will take charge here. The new government will have my full support and guidance. Good work will continue in the future as well, and Bihar will move forward significantly.”

Following his resignation, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) held a meeting in Patna where Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary was elected as the BJP legislature party leader in Bihar. He has been named the next Chief Minister and is expected to take oath shortly.

The announcement was made after a meeting held at the Central Hall of the Bihar Legislative Assembly.

The oath-taking ceremony is likely to take place on Wednesday.
