OpenAI is stepping into the professional networking and recruitment space with the announcement of its upcoming AI-first Jobs Platform, set to debut by mid-2026. The initiative positions the ChatGPT maker directly against Microsoft-owned LinkedIn, adding another layer to the duo’s complex partnership.

Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of Applications, revealed in a blog post that the platform will leverage AI to connect businesses with the “right talent” and help job seekers find roles better suited to their skills. The company has already begun collaborations with employers such as Walmart, John Deere, Accenture and BCG, as well as local governments and community organisations. The aim, Simo stressed, is not only to benefit large enterprises but also to give small businesses and local institutions access to AI talent that can fuel growth.

Beyond matchmaking, the platform will integrate OpenAI Certifications through its existing OpenAI Academy, which currently serves over 2 million learners. These certifications, ranging from basic AI literacy to advanced prompt engineering, will allow individuals to showcase verified skills. OpenAI has pledged to certify 10 million Americans by 2030, with Walmart among its key partners in rolling out workforce training programs.

The move comes amid heightened debate on AI’s impact on jobs. While many fear automation-led layoffs, OpenAI argues that upskilling workers and matching them with AI-driven opportunities can expand economic access. As Sam Altman hinted, the Jobs Platform is just one of several consumer-facing products in the pipeline, signaling OpenAI’s ambition to build beyond ChatGPT into tools that reshape professional life itself.
