OpenAI has appointed Michael Tabtabai as its first Global Vice-President of Creative, marking a significant step in the company’s push to strengthen its marketing and brand-building capabilities. The newly created role highlights OpenAI’s intent to position creativity at the heart of its global storytelling efforts.
Tabtabai, who started in late August, joins from Coinbase where he held the role of VP Creative for over three years. He will report to OpenAI’s Chief Marketing Officer, Kate Rouch, who is set to return from medical leave this fall. Both executives earlier worked together at Coinbase, where they spearheaded high-impact campaigns, including the viral bouncing QR code Super Bowl ad in 2022.
With ChatGPT now crossing 700 million weekly active users, OpenAI is scaling its creative strategy to communicate the broader potential of generative AI. Tabtabai is expected to collaborate closely with OpenAI’s in-house studio led by Executive Creative Director Zach Stubenvoll.
A veteran of Google, Wieden+Kennedy, and Crispin Porter + Bogusky, Tabtabai brings extensive experience in culture-shaping campaigns across technology and consumer brands. His appointment comes as competition intensifies in the generative AI space, where marketing and consumer trust are increasingly central to growth.
