The AI startup of Elon Musk, xAI sues Apple and OpenAI, claiming that the businesses violated antitrust laws by preventing competition in the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence market.
In 2024, Apple established a first-party cooperation with OpenAI by integrating ChatGPT into Siri, its writing tools, and its camera functions. Musk's businesses, xAI and X, said in the case filed in a US federal court that "As a result of the Apple-OpenAI deal, ChatGPT is not just the default — it is the only generative AI chatbot with a first-party integration into Apple’s smartphones." It further stated that "exclusive access to billions of potential prompts" had been granted to OpenAI.
According to the lawsuit, Apple has been alleged to manipulate its App Store rankings and delayed app updates to disadvantage xAI-developed Grok and the "unlawful agreement" denies rival chatbots equal reach.
The filing was rejected by an OpenAI representative, who stated: "This latest filing is consistent with Mr Musk’s ongoing pattern of harassment." Apple, meanwhile, has stated in the past that its App Store was made to be impartial and equitable.
Musk has long accused OpenAI of controlling the chatbot business and criticized Apple for its App Store policies. In his conflict with Sam Altman, his erstwhile OpenAI ally who is now his adversary, the case represents yet another turning point.
Musk's lawsuit places his nascent AI business squarely against two of the most powerful companies in Silicon Valley, opening a new front in the fiercest fight in the area.
