  • Alphabet reported $82.01 billion in advertising revenue for Q3 2026, a 10.6% increase year-on-year, but below analysts' expectations of $83.4 billion.
  • Google Search and other advertising generated $63.35 billion, up 12% from the previous year, yet fell short of Wall Street's estimate of $65 billion.
  • YouTube advertising revenue rose 9.2% to $11.21 billion, while Google Network advertising grew 1.4% to $7.46 billion, both missing market expectations.
  • Overall revenue increased 25% to $127.6 billion, but also fell short of the anticipated $128.2 billion, leading to a more than 10% drop in Alphabet shares in after-hours trading.

Google parent Alphabet reported $82.01 billion in advertising revenue in the third quarter of 2026, up 10.6% year-on-year, although the figure came in below analysts’ expectations of roughly $83.4 billion.

Google Search and other advertising remained the company’s largest revenue stream, rising 12% to $63.35 billion from $56.57 billion a year earlier. However, Search also missed Wall Street estimates of around $65 billion, while its year-on-year growth slowed from earlier quarters.

YouTube advertising revenue increased 9.2% to $11.21 billion, compared with $10.26 billion in Q3 2025, but also came in slightly below market expectations. Google Network advertising revenue grew more modestly, up 1.4% to $7.46 billion.

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said the company’s AI investments were driving higher Search usage, including commercial searches, and that year-on-year query growth was at its highest level in five years.

The numbers are closely watched as Google integrates generative AI more deeply into Search through AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini, while simultaneously working to preserve the advertising economics of its most important business.

Overall Alphabet revenue rose 25% to $127.6 billion, although it missed Wall Street’s $128.2 billion estimate. Advertising still accounted for roughly two-thirds of company revenue, but Google Cloud was the quarter’s standout growth business, with revenue surging 103% to $30.71 billion.

Alphabet’s results also reflected the extraordinary cost of its AI expansion. Capital expenditure reached $51.36 billion during the quarter, contributing to negative free cash flow of $9.07 billion. The company expects capital expenditure to rise significantly again in 2027.

Alphabet shares fell more than 10% in extended trading following the results, as weaker-than-expected advertising and profit figures outweighed the acceleration in Cloud.

For advertisers, the quarter presents an important counterpoint to predictions that generative AI will rapidly undermine Google Search. Search ad revenue is still expanding at a double-digit rate, and Google says AI is generating more commercial queries. The more immediate question is whether that increased engagement can translate into ad growth fast enough to match the enormous investment Google is making in the AI-led future of Search.
