Legendary singer Asha Bhosle’s demise on April 12 at the age of 92 has left the Indian creative world in mourning. Among those who stepped forward to pay tribute was Prasoon Joshi, lyricist, poet, and Chairman and CEO of McCann Worldgroup India.

In a deeply personal Instagram video, Joshi did not reach for conventional condolences. Instead, he read aloud a poem he had written and dedicated to Bhosle during her lifetime. A poem she had cherished.
"A talented person like Asha ji isn't born in this world daily," Joshi said in the video. "I am fortunate that I got a chance to spend time with her, to work with her."

He then introduced the poem with quiet reverence, noting that Bhosle had received it warmly, before reciting it in full:

"Abhi abhi ek chanchal ladki hawa ke jaise guzar gayi

Mann ko chhukar jaane kab hum sab ke andar utar gayi

Hare hare patton ki nok pe,

Tharrai si oos ki boond

Sunti saari srishti baith kar khamoshi se aankhen moond

Abhi abhi ek nadi suron ki saamne aakar thehar gayi

Abhi abhi ek chanchal ladki hawa ke jaise guzar gayi

Gumsum gumsum baithi bandish, uska rasta dekh rahi

Kab humsang khelegi Asha,

Bandish bandish pooch rahi

Kismat wala hai jisne,

Usne us sur udaan ko dekha hai

Aur uske sang ek surile aasmaan ko dekha hai

Jagi rituen bole mausam

Jab jab bhi wo jidhar gayi

Abhi abhi ek chanchal ladki hawa ke jaise guzar gayi"

The poem, characteristically Joshi in its imagery (dewdrops trembling on the tips of green leaves, seasons awakening at a voice's passing) reads now as an elegy that arrived before its time, as though written in quiet premonition of this very moment.

Joshi also took to X to articulate what made Bhosle irreplaceable as a musical force. "With Asha ji's passing, we lose an iconic voice. One of Indian popular music's most nuanced interpreters of emotion," he wrote, adding that her singing carried texture, playfulness, depth, and an effortless authenticity that made every song feel fully lived in. He signed off with a personal note that he had been fortunate to spend time with her in conversation before closing with a line that captured the collective loss plainly and without embellishment: "All music lovers are a little poorer today."

Bhosle, widely regarded as one of the most versatile voices in Indian cinema, passed away in Mumbai after a career spanning nearly eight decades and a recorded body of work exceeding 12,000 songs. She had been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital with a chest infection and exhaustion before succumbing to multiple organ failure.

Joshi's tribute stood apart from the broader outpouring of grief in its intimacy. It was not a recounting of milestones or accolades, but a poet's farewell: private, unhurried, and lit from within by genuine admiration. In a landscape of public mourning, it was, perhaps, the most honest kind.
