The week saw some important appointments and announcements. WPP's Wunderman appointed Mel Edwards as Global Chief Executive Officer; she will take over from Mark Read, who was recently named as CEO of WPP. According to media reports, PepsiCo’s outgoing marketing head Vipul Prakash is set to join online travel company MakeMyTrip as the Chief Operating Officer. Former COO Of FCB Ulka Sanjay Tandon Joins Thinkstr As CEO.

Star Sports has appointed ex-Airtel Chief Brand and Online Officer Rajiv Mathrani as its new Chief Marketing Officer. ALTBalaji appointed Divya Dixit as Senior Vice President and Head Of Marketing.

Ashish Bhasin, Chairman and CEO - South Asia, Dentsu Aegis Network, and Pratap Pawar, Chairman, Sakal Media Group, have been re-elected as the Chairman and Vice-Chairman of The Media Research Users Council (MRUC) at the 24th Annual General Meeting in Mumbai this week.

Sumit Awasthi, Deputy Managing Editor Network 18 will join ABP Network. Awasthi, who started his career with Zee News has close to 22 years of experience in the field of journalism and has worked with some of the top media houses in the country.

Karan Bajaj quit as Head of Discovery Communications India to pursue his own entrepreneurial ambitions. After quitting Viacom 18, Gaurav Lulla, who was head of digital media for MTV India and English Cluster including Vh1, Comedy Central and Colors Infinity, is starting a new content studio named Loose Cannons, a boutique content studio that specialises in content creation for Media hubs and brands.

In other big news, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff and his wife Lynne Benioff have bought Time Magazine for $190 million from Meredith Corp. The Wall Street Journal first reported the sale, which is expected to close in the next 30 days.

Hima Das, the first Indian woman athlete to win a gold at a global track event has partnered with sports brand adidas. Das, will now be equipped with the very best offerings from adidas for her racing and training needs, as she continues her journey to becoming the best sprinter in the world.

This week also celebrated birthdays of popular figures such actor Kareena Kapoor and Prime Minister of India Narendar Modi.

It’s never a dull moment in the marketing and advertising industry. Last week too saw some major dismissals as well as appointments, and wins. Havas Group bolstered its leadership strength with the appointment of Rana Barua as CEO of Havas Group India. Barua was last CEO – Group of Creativeland Asia.

Sridhar Ramaswamy stepped down as Google’s Advertising Chief. Ramaswamy, who joined Google in 2003, is said to have played a critical role in growing Googles’ ad revenue from $10 billion in 2013 to the current over $100 billion.

Sagar Mahabaleshwarkar, Chief Creative Officer of Cheil WW India decided to move on from the organisation to pursue new opportunities. Emmanuel Upputuru will be replacing him.

Eros International appointed Rafiq Gangjee as its new CMO. Previously this role was carried out by Prerna Singh, who has now moved to the content team as VP - Talent & Short Films.

The week also saw Sony Pictures Network and Tata Sky lock horns over channel drop. SPN issued a statement condemning Tata Sky for choosing to drop 22 SPN channels from its subscription, sources in Tata Sky claimed that the channels dropped barely comprise 3 per cent of viewership.

There were also few heart-warming campaigns such as by brands like luggage manufacturer Samsonite, who decided to take up the initiative to launch a campaign focusing on reviving the tourism in Kerala.

The week that went by saw some important appointments taking place in the industry. Viacom18 rejigged its top deck, and D Shivakumar was elected Chairman of ASCI. exchange4media caught up with Shivakumar to understand his vision for the self-regulatory body.

The past week saw many interesting developments as companies seem to be in the pitching mood, with the total value of the accounts for which pitches have been called this year so far standing at around Rs 4,000 crore, and includes big brands such Vivo, Samsung, GSK, Mondelez and Lenovo+ Motorola.

After Radhikha Apte and her continued collaboration with Netflix was trolled on the Internet with a series of memes, Netflix this week released a fake video and a movie poster called ‘Omnipresent’ as a humorous response to the trolls, giving rise to the 'Apt Hai' trend. This led to brands including Zomato, CEAT Tyres and KFC capitalising on the trend.

This week also saw several appointments and people movement announcements. Guy Hearn has been named as OMD's Chief Product Officer, APAC, while Unilever's Geetu Verma is all set to take up her new overseas role as Vice President, Nutrition & Natural Platforms.

Gurmeet Singh stepped down as Vice President and Managing Director of Yahoo India, while NP Singh, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Sony Pictures Networks has been elected as the new President of the Indian Broadcasting Foundation (IBF)

We also learnt this week that advertising giant WPP is all poised to announce the appointment of Mark Read as its new CEO after the exit of Sir Martin Sorrell.

Last week saw some big wins with agency Mindshare India bagging the digital mandate for Hindustan Unilever Limited worth Rs 400 cr. MediaCom bagged Vivo's media mandate worth Rs 350-400 cr. The account will be managed and supervised from the MediaCom Gurgaon office.

SBI Life has appointed Mullen Lintas as its creative agency and Mindshare as the Media agency, following a closely contested multi-agency pitch. Star India, the official broadcaster of Asia Cup 2018, which begins on September 15, is pegged to earn Rs 250cr in ad revenue.

Another big news that made headlines this week was Mark Read, former Strategy and Digital Chief at WPP being in the process of becoming the successor to its former CEO & Founder Sir Martin Sorrell.

Honda Jazz new viral video featuring a ‘cat’ as a marketing tool managed to receive a whopping 27 million hits all in a day’s time.

Past few days have been unforgettable for many with the state of Kerala facing the worst flood in almost 100 years which has claimed more than 370 lives. Brands and the media world in India stood for the flood victims and contributed towards the Chief Minister's Distress Relief Fund (CMDRF).

This week the Indian Content Marketing Awards, to be held on September 7, announced the shortlists with Mindshare and Jagran Prakashan in the lead.

The week saw two major appointments in the industry. Vikram Sakhuja was appointed the chairman of IRS Technical Committee and Sejal Shah was named the Managing Partner and Head of Publicis Media Exchange. As Sakhuja took charge of the Technical Committee, MRUC said that IRS 2018 was on track.

During the week, exchange4media spoke to the CEO of Prasar Bharti Shashi Shekhar Vempati who said they were trying to make their revenues far more attractive.

The week saw some high-profile resignations and appointments. ABP News Managing Editor Milind Khandekar stepped down; Achint Setia quits Viacom18 to join Myntra Designs as VP- Marketing; Dentsu X MD James Hawkins moved to PHD as Asia Pacific CEO; and Hyundai Motors India Director for Marketing and Sales resigned from his post.

Another highlight of the week was Wavemaker India winning Mondelez’s media duties Worth Rs 450 crore. Also, during the week, exchange4media did some very interesting insight stories on how the hike in newsprint price is affecting the print media, how Google is trying to make its search better and how media houses are making the most of onam by hiking their ad rates.

A quick round-up of the stories that made headlines this week

One of highlights of the week was the much-popular annual Pitch Top 50 Brands event hosted by the exchange4media group on Thursday. Ambuja Cement, HUL, Reliance Jio and Amul were among the winners. The gala function saw participation from the who’s who of the industry. The event included some very insightful sessions from business leaders. The week also saw the announcement of Q1 results of several companies. The other important news was the Supreme Court refusing to stay the Madras HC’s judgment on TRAI tariff order and TRAI saying that people, not companies, should have control over their data.

Last week saw some major dismissals as well as appointments. McCann Health fired its Global CCO Jeremy Perrott for code of conduct violation. Jose Papa, Managing Director of Cannes Lions Festival was made redundant. Ogilvy fired their Worldwide Chief Creative Officer, Tham Khai Meng, after several employees complained regarding his behaviour.

Network18 hired Praveen Swami as Group Consulting Editor with a specific focus on strategic affairs, defense and diplomacy, while Gaurav Kalra as Network Sports Editor will steer the sports coverage across brands and platforms and oversee CricketNext.com. Abhishek Chaswal joined McCann Worldgroup as their Executive Creative Director

This week also saw the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (TRAI) support the principle of net neutrality. The regulatory gave recommendations to implement a new telecom policy amending the current license agreement with service providers immediately.

Also with the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia finale this weekend, Sony Pictures Network (India), the official India broadcast partner for FIFA World Cup, has now got 35 brands on-board as the championship gets closer to its last leg. The finale between France and Croatia will be aired tomorrow at 8.30 pm.

Reliance Industries Limited’s Mukesh D Ambani announced the launch of Jio Giga Fiber, an ultra-high speed fixed line broadband service, for homes and enterprises. With a target of reaching out to 50 million homes across 1100 cities through a fixed-line broadband service, Reliance Jio certainly has some big plans in the coming months to disrupt the Cable TV industry.

In the digital world, Whatsapp put out an advisory on battling fake news and limiting the spread of the same with a full page ad on tips to identify suspicious information and double-checking photos, links and information shared on the app. The move took place when IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad demanded accountability from social media platforms that are increasingly being abused and used to spread fake news.

Twitter, in an attempt to clean its platform removed locked accounts from follower count of users globally. As part of the initiative, the social media giant suspended over 70 million bots over the last two months.
