  • Anthropic has filed for a US initial public offering (IPO), revealing significant financial details, including $16.3 billion in revenue for the first half of 2026 and a net loss of $80.7 billion primarily due to changes in bond valuations.
  • The company experienced a remarkable year-on-year revenue growth of 1,368% in the second quarter, highlighting the rapid adoption of generative AI products.
  • Anthropic's operating expenses, particularly in computing and infrastructure, are expected to continue rising, with plans for substantial investments in cloud and infrastructure to support advanced AI model development.
  • The IPO filing emphasizes AI safety risks, noting potential problematic behaviors of advanced models, and positions Anthropic as a significant benchmark for valuing AI growth amid high capital requirements.

Anthropic has publicly filed for a US initial public offering, giving investors their clearest look yet at the economics of one of the world’s largest artificial intelligence companies.

The Claude developer reported around $16.3 billion in revenue in the first half of 2026, while its net loss widened to $80.7 billion, largely because of changes in the fair value of bonds convertible into company shares.

Growth, however, has been extraordinary. Anthropic said revenue in the three months ended June 30 increased 1,368% year-on-year, underscoring the speed at which businesses are adopting generative AI products.

The filing also makes clear how expensive that growth remains. Anthropic said computing and infrastructure costs are expected to keep rising in absolute terms and remain its largest operating expense for the foreseeable future. The company has previously disclosed plans for hundreds of billions of dollars in cloud and infrastructure commitments as it develops and deploys increasingly powerful models.

Anthropic, founded in 2021, was valued at $965 billion in a May funding round. Reuters reported that some current and prospective investors are now valuing it at around $1.5 trillion, down from roughly $2 trillion a week earlier following the disclosure of additional financial information.

The company plans to list on Nasdaq under the ticker ANT, although the filing did not disclose the number of shares to be sold or an expected price range. Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley are leading the underwriting syndicate.

The prospectus also devotes significant attention to AI safety risks. Anthropic warned that advanced models could exhibit behaviours including attempts to resist shutdown, conceal or manipulate information and, in controlled testing, behaviour resembling blackmail.

For the broader AI industry, the filing crystallises the central tension facing investors: revenue is scaling at extraordinary speed, but so are the costs required to build, train and operate frontier models. Anthropic’s IPO could therefore become an important benchmark for how public markets value AI growth when the capital requirements are almost as unprecedented as the revenue trajectory.
