In the landscape of Indian marketing, advertising, and cultural commentary, Santosh Desai stands as a singular figure whose professional journey reflects both strategic brilliance and intellectual curiosity. As Managing Director and CEO of Futurebrands India and Founder of Think9 Consumer Technologies, his career trajectory offers valuable lessons in bridging commerce with cultural insight.
His advertising career began unexpectedly at Ulka (now Draftfcb Ulka) in the mid-1980s, after a chance meeting with a batch mate from IIM Ahmedabad led to a 30-second interview with K George John. This serendipitous start opened doors to what would become a distinguished two-decade career in advertising. Over 21 years in the industry, Desai was strategically involved in building key brands for numerous local and multinational clients, honing his expertise in understanding the Indian consumer psyche.
The pinnacle of his advertising career came when he served as President of McCann-Erickson India, one of the country's most prestigious advertising agencies. A defining moment in his career occurred during his tenure with Mudra (now DDB Mudra), when a presentation to Pepsi Foods sparked the idea of examining brands through the lens of Indian culture, exploring concepts like namkeen and their cultural relevance. He carried this philosophy to McCann Erickson, where it became the agency's calling card.
In 2006, Desai made a bold career pivot, leaving advertising to join Kishore Biyani's Future Group, where he established Future Brands as a branding services and consulting company. This transition reflected his desire to move beyond the constraints of traditional advertising and engage more deeply with brand strategy and cultural analysis.
Desai's academic foundation began with a degree in economics, followed by a postgraduate degree in management from the prestigious Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. This rigorous training at one of India's premier business schools would prove instrumental in shaping his analytical approach to understanding brands and consumer behavior.
Throughout his professional journey, Desai has addressed global management boards of multinational giants including Microsoft, Philips, Unilever, Coca-Cola, and Reckitt Benckiser, sharing insights that blend marketing acumen with cultural intelligence. His expertise has made him a sought-after speaker at forums from Singapore to Lebanon, and a guest lecturer at universities both in India and abroad.
