Just days before Easter, which is one of the highest-demand periods for chocolate across Europe, a truck carrying over 400,000 KitKat bars, has gone missing somewhere between Italy and Poland. According to reports, the vehicle disappeared while en route, with both the truck and its cargo yet to be located. The stolen cargo comprised units from a new KitKat chocolate range, weighing 12 tonnes in total.

Nestlé moved quickly to address the concerns over potential shortage during Easter, clarifying that “supply is not affected” with no consumer safety concerns.

Addressing the incident, Nestlé confirmed that it is working closely with authorities and logistics partners to trace the missing shipment. Nestlé has highlighted that each KitKat bar in the shipment carries a unique batch code, allowing products to be traced back to their origin. This system is expected to play a key role in identifying any of the stolen stock if it reappears in unauthorised markets or alternative distribution channels.

In order to diffuse the tension, company’s spokesperson referenced the brand’s well-known messaging, noting that while KitKat has long encouraged people to “take a break,” the situation appeared to have been taken literally by those responsible for the theft by making a “break” for it.

What the Internet Said

Soon after the news broke, internet has reacted in a very peculiar way. Rather than outrage and shock, social media is filling up with memes and jokes. The scale of the heist and the fact that it involved chocolate, seemed to push the story into a more humorous territory for many users. Many users leaned into humour, with comments like, “Someone really took ‘Have a break’ way too seriously,” and “Fast & Furious: Chocolate Edition just dropped.”

A user commented, “It’s not about the chocolate, it’s about sending a message. Nobody gets a break.”

Another said, “Police are looking for suspects who are crispy, crunchy, and likely covered in chocolate.”

Nestlé has also drawn the attention to what it described as a rapidly escalating problem for businesses across European logistics networks.

The theft comes against the backdrop of a joint report from the International Union of Marine Insurance and the Transported Asset Protection Association EMEA, which outlined a rise in cargo theft and freight fraud across Europe, with more sophisticated methods of deception increasingly being deployed against logistics operators of all sizes.

Investigations into the missing shipment are ongoing, with authorities yet to determine the exact circumstances under which the truck was diverted and where the consignment may have been taken.
