  • Prasar Bharati has announced an upgrade to its DD Free Dish platform, introducing an advanced Electronic Program Guide (EPG) to enhance channel navigation and content discovery for viewers.
  • The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has enabled television sets with built-in satellite tuners to directly access DD Free Dish channels, reducing the need for separate set-top boxes and lowering equipment costs.
  • The new EPG framework includes features such as genre-based channel categorization, Logical Channel Numbering (LCN), and a seven-day programming schedule, aimed at improving the user experience for millions of viewers, especially in rural areas.
  • This upgrade is part of Prasar Bharati's strategy to strengthen DD Free Dish's competitiveness against digital streaming platforms and is expected to evolve with ongoing updates and align with modern broadcast technologies.

In a move aimed at modernising India’s free-to-air satellite television ecosystem, Prasar Bharati has announced a significant upgrade to its DD Free Dish platform with the rollout of an advanced Electronic Program Guide (EPG) data framework. The development is expected to streamline channel navigation, improve content discovery, and support next-generation set-top box (STB) manufacturing.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting rolled out a framework enabling television sets with in-built satellite tuners to receive DD Free Dish channels directly, eliminating the need for separate set-top boxes.

The initiative, backed by a new technical framework for Advanced Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) services is expected to lower equipment costs for households, reduce hardware dependency and improve the user experience for millions of DD Free Dish viewers, particularly in rural and price-sensitive markets.

At the core of the move is a twin-pronged push: integrating satellite reception capabilities directly into television sets and introducing an advanced programme guide that allows viewers to browse channels, schedules, logical channel numbering (LCN), genres and landing-page information through a unified interface.

The development marks a notable shift in India’s free-to-air television ecosystem, where DD Free Dish has historically relied on external set-top boxes and dish installations for access. By embedding satellite tuners within television sets, the government is attempting to make free DTH access as seamless as terrestrial or cable viewing.

According to the official technical notification, the upgrade introduces enhanced EPG services that include structured genre-based channel categorisation, Logical Channel Numbering (LCN), and landing page integration. The initiative is designed to deliver a more intuitive and organised viewing experience for millions of DD Free Dish users across the country.

Focus on Structured Content Discovery

The revamped system will enable bundling of channels into distinct genres, allowing viewers to browse content more efficiently. Genre-wise LCN mapping is expected to simplify channel surfing, addressing a long-standing challenge for users navigating a large number of free-to-air channels.

Additionally, the inclusion of landing page data will allow viewers to directly access specific channels or curated content experiences, reducing friction in content discovery.

A key feature of the upgrade is the provision of a seven-day Electronic Program Guide for each channel, offering viewers improved visibility into upcoming programming schedules.

Technical Framework and Industry Implications

The notification outlines detailed PSI/SI (Program Specific Information/Service Information) descriptor specifications required for implementing the advanced EPG system. These include descriptor presence matrices across tables such as PAT (Program Association Table), BAT (Bouquet Association Table), and NIT (Network Information Table), along with parameters for service lists, network linkage, and satellite delivery systems.

The platform continues to operate on GSAT-15 transponders using MPEG-4 and DVB-S2 standards, ensuring compatibility with modern broadcast technologies.

Importantly, the specifications are targeted at original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and developers working on upcoming satellite-enabled television sets and set-top boxes. The document explicitly notes that the guidelines are intended to aid in the development of devices with inbuilt satellite tuners capable of supporting the enhanced EPG ecosystem.

Evolving Free-to-Air Ecosystem

The upgrade reflects Prasar Bharati’s broader push to strengthen DD Free Dish’s competitiveness in an increasingly fragmented television market, where digital streaming platforms continue to gain ground. By improving usability and aligning with global broadcast standards, the public broadcaster aims to retain and expand its user base, particularly in price-sensitive and rural markets.

Industry observers note that the introduction of structured metadata and improved navigation could also open up new monetisation and advertising opportunities, as better categorisation enables more targeted content placement.

Future Updates Expected

Prasar Bharati has indicated that the current release (Version 1.0) is subject to ongoing revisions, with updated specifications to be issued as the platform evolves. This suggests a phased rollout of features and continued alignment with emerging broadcast technologies.

As India’s largest free DTH platform, DD Free Dish serves over 40 million households. The latest upgrade underscores its role as a critical pillar in the country’s broadcasting infrastructure, particularly for delivering accessible television content at scale.
