In a media landscape long dominated by incumbents like Press Trust of India (PTI), Asian News International (ANI), and United News of India (UNI), a quiet but significant shift is underway.

IANS, owned by AMG Media Networks, a subsidiary of Gautam Adani’s flagship firm Adani Enterprises, has been steadily carving out a position of influence, thanks to a spate of breaking stories and original content that have made waves across the Indian media ecosystem.

Over the last 12 to 15 months, IANS has intensified its focus on exclusive, high-impact reportage. A recent example that underscores its growing editorial muscle was the breaking news on Radico Khaitan’s launch of ‘Trikaal’ whiskey. IANS was the first to report the development, a move that triggered widespread media coverage and scrutiny, eventually leading the liquor major to withdraw the brand name. The incident spotlighted IANS’s ability to shape narratives and drive national media attention.

The agency’s rise coincides with a significant change in ownership. In December 2023, Adani Group acquired a 50.5 per cent stake in IANS India Pvt Ltd. Just a month later, in January 2024, Adani Enterprises announced it had raised its stake in the agency by subscribing to fresh shares worth ₹5 crore. This move increased AMG Media Networks’ voting rights in IANS to 76%, along with control over nearly all non-voting shares.

Yesterday, IANS did the Russian Ambasador’s interview, which was picked up by media outlets. What is notable is that even post operation sindoor the IANS coverage was factual and balanced and no stories were factually incorrect.

Traditionally, newswire services in India have played a foundational role in the media supply chain, providing written, visual and video content to television channels, newspapers, digital publications and radio networks. While PTI and ANI continue to lead the space and UNI has witnessed a decline in recent years, the rise of IANS is injecting new competition and vigor into the sector.

What sets IANS apart is not just its ownership but its editorial strategy. The agency has focused on delivering differentiated, original content that goes beyond the generic tickers common in wire services. Its agile newsroom and timely delivery have found takers in a media environment increasingly driven by speed and exclusivity.

As India's media landscape continues to evolve, IANS’s ascent under the Adani umbrella signals a broader transformation in how news is sourced, shared, and consumed. Just 15 months ago, IANS was not doing well and had no direction and impact and there was lack of editorial clarity and leadership. The battle for dominance among India’s wire services is heating up and IANS, it appears, is no longer content being a quiet player.
