Mumbai’s iconic performance venue, Habitat Comedy Club, has temporarily shut its doors, citing rising concerns over artistic freedom, security, and accountability. The venue, known for hosting some of India’s biggest stand-up comedians and performers, announced the closure on Instagram, pointing to repeated vandalism and external pressure as key reasons.
Shiv Sena workers vandalized the club in Khar on Sunday following stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra's remarks on Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde in his recent YouTube video.
In a heartfelt statement, Habitat expressed its distress over recent attacks and the growing difficulty of being held accountable for performers' content. The venue reiterated that artists alone are responsible for their creative choices, yet it has been repeatedly targeted due to the performances it hosts. As a result, Habitat has chosen to shut down temporarily to reassess how it can continue supporting free expression while ensuring safety.
“The Habitat has always been a neutral platform for all kinds of artists to share their work in any language, keeping its doors open for anything that requires a stage,” the statement read. “Providing a space for expression not only encourages people to discover their creativity but also helps them build their talent and sometimes even find a new career.”
While condemning acts of vandalism, Habitat urged for constructive discussions instead of hostility, emphasizing that violence weakens the spirit of art and dialogue. The venue called upon artists, audiences, and industry stakeholders to engage in meaningful conversations on balancing performer rights with venue security.
The controversy surrounding artistic freedom has also impacted stand-up comedian and YouTuber Samay Raina, who announced the postponement of his highly anticipated ‘Unfiltered’ India tour. His shows in Delhi’s Talkatora Stadium on March 21 and 23 have been cancelled, along with performances in Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Kolkata.
Raina took to Instagram to inform fans, stating, "Hello guys, I'm rescheduling my India Tour. You will get the refunds shortly, see you soon." His decision follows earlier cancellations in Ahmedabad and Surat due to threats from the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP).
The catalyst for these cancellations appears to be the backlash against an episode of Raina’s show, India’s Got Latent. During the episode, fellow panellist Ranveer Allahbadia posed an inappropriate and widely condemned question about ‘parents and sex.’ The remark triggered significant public outrage, resulting in multiple police complaints and legal scrutiny.
Despite being known for his edgy humour, Raina was visibly taken aback by the remark, reacting with disbelief: “What the f***? Kya ho gaya hai Ranveer bhai ko? [What has happened to Ranveer?]”
The Maharashtra Cyber Cell summoned several creators involved in the episode, including Ashish Chanchlani, Ranveer Allahbadia, and Apoorva Mukhija, to record their statements. However, Raina, who is currently on his world tour, has yet to comply.
Initially, the court restricted all the panellists from sharing content online. However, the Supreme Court later allowed Ranveer Allahbadia to resume his podcast The Ranveer Show, considering the employment of nearly 280 individuals dependent on its operations.
Amid mounting pressure, Raina took down all India’s Got Latent episodes from his YouTube channel. In a statement on X, he wrote, “Everything that is happening has been too much for me to handle. I have removed all India’s Got Latent videos from my channel. My only objective was to make people laugh and have a good time. I will fully cooperate with all agencies to ensure their inquiries are concluded fairly.”
With his tour on hold and legal matters still unfolding, Raina’s future in comedy remains uncertain. Whether he will return to the stage soon or take a longer break from public performances remains to be seen. For now, his focus appears to be on navigating the controversy and protecting his career.
