- Amarjit Singh Batra, Managing Director of Spotify India, celebrated his birthday on September 17, marking his significant contributions to India's digital economy and music streaming landscape.
- Batra's career spans over eight years at Spotify, where he has focused on localizing the platform to cater to India's diverse music preferences and consumer behaviors since its launch in February 2019.
- Prior to Spotify, Batra played key roles in the early internet economy with companies like Baazee, eBay India, and OLX, where he helped establish online marketplaces and adapt to changing consumer habits.
- Under his leadership, Indian artists have gained increased visibility, with a notable rise in streams and royalties, reflecting the growing global reach of Indian music and the evolution of the music industry.
As Amarjit Singh Batra celebrated his birthday on September 17, it offered an opportunity to recognise the journey of a business leader who has played an important role in shaping India’s digital economy. From the early days of e-commerce to the evolution of music streaming, Batra has consistently worked at the intersection of technology, consumer behaviour and business innovation.
Currently serving as Managing Director of Spotify India and General Manager for South Asia, the Middle East and Africa (SAMEA), Batra has spent more than eight years helping build Spotify’s presence in one of the world’s most diverse and competitive music markets.
His professional journey, however, began long before Spotify became synonymous with music streaming in India.
Batra was part of the country’s early internet economy, working with Baazee and eBay India, where he handled responsibilities spanning category management, advertising sales, partnerships and new business initiatives. These experiences laid the foundation for a career centred on understanding emerging digital markets and translating new ideas into scalable businesses.
His next major chapter came with OLX, where he helped establish the company’s India operations and spent nearly a decade building the online classifieds business. At a time when buying and selling pre-owned goods online was still an unfamiliar concept for many Indian consumers, Batra helped develop a marketplace that connected buyers and sellers through the internet.
The experience demonstrated his ability to build a business around changing consumer habits, a capability that would become equally important in his next assignment.
In April 2018, Batra joined Spotify to establish its India operations, ahead of the platform’s official launch in February 2019. The challenge was considerable. India’s music industry was dominated by film soundtracks, regional preferences were highly fragmented, and consumers had long been accustomed to accessing music for free.
Rather than approaching India as simply another international market, Spotify developed a localised offering that recognised the country’s linguistic diversity, listening preferences and price sensitivity.
Under Batra’s leadership, the company expanded its presence through personalised discovery, regional-language content, independent music initiatives and subscription offerings designed for Indian consumers. His responsibilities expanded further in July 2022, when he took charge of Spotify’s SAMEA region while continuing to lead its India business.
One of the defining aspects of this journey has been the growing visibility of Indian artists, particularly independent musicians and regional-language performers.
Spotify’s latest Loud & Clear report, released in September 2026, offers a glimpse of this transformation. Indian artists generated nearly 335 billion streams on the platform in 2025, while royalties generated by Indian artists increased 29% year-on-year. More than 40% of those royalties came from listeners outside India, demonstrating the increasing global reach of Indian music.
The rise of independent music and regional-language artists reflects the changing landscape in which Spotify has been operating under Batra’s leadership.
Beyond the business milestones, Batra’s journey stands out for its continuity of purpose. Whether building a marketplace for pre-owned goods or establishing a global streaming platform in India, his career has involved introducing new digital experiences, understanding consumers and helping emerging businesses achieve scale.
As the music industry navigates evolving audience preferences, artificial intelligence, new monetisation models and the growing global appeal of Indian artists, Batra continues to lead Spotify’s business across a diverse and rapidly changing region.
His birthday is an occasion to celebrate not merely the milestones of a successful corporate career, but also the larger journey of a leader who has helped shape how Indians engage with digital platforms.
From changing the way people buy and sell to influencing how they discover and experience music, Amarjit Singh Batra’s professional journey has been one of building businesses around the possibilities of technology.
Here’s wishing him continued success, good health and many more milestones in the years ahead.
