- Sharma held international leadership positions in the Philippines and Vietnam, focusing on business transformation and navigating challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, which expanded his experience in operations and strategic growth.
- As Managing Director, he aims to double the company's turnover from ₹4,000 crore to ₹8,500 crore by 2029, emphasizing innovation, distribution expansion, and a strong creative marketing philosophy while balancing personal well-being with professional commitments.
Some professional journeys are defined by frequent changes, while others are built on the ability to continuously evolve within a single organisation. Nikhil Sharma's career at Perfetti Van Melle is a compelling example of the latter.
From joining the confectionery major as a management trainee in 1999 to taking charge of its India business as Managing Director in 2024, Sharma's journey reflects professional growth, adaptability and a deep understanding of consumers and brands.
An alumnus of TAPMI, Manipal, Sharma began his career in sales, spending his initial years understanding markets, distribution networks and consumer behaviour. His transition to marketing in 2002 marked an important turning point, placing him at the centre of a company building some of India's most memorable confectionery brands.
Over the years, Sharma contributed to the growth of brands such as Alpenliebe Eclairs, Juzt Jelly and Creamfills. His marketing journey culminated in his appointment as Marketing Director of Perfetti Van Melle India in 2012, a position he held until 2015.
His leadership journey took an international turn in 2015 when he was appointed Managing Director of Perfetti Van Melle Philippines. His tenure was marked by a focus on business transformation and growth, offering him an opportunity to lead operations in a dynamic Southeast Asian market.
In 2018, he moved to Vietnam as Managing Director, taking responsibility for another important market. His tenure included navigating the unprecedented operational challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic while ensuring business continuity.
These international assignments broadened his leadership experience beyond marketing, encompassing business operations, organisational development and strategic growth across diverse markets.
His return to India in February 2024 as Managing Director marked a significant homecoming. Having started his professional journey with the company's Indian operations, Sharma returned to lead the business where it all began.
One of the defining aspects of Sharma's professional identity is his belief in the enduring power of creativity and storytelling.
At the exchange4media Screenage Conference 2025, during a leadership dialogue moderated by Dr Annurag Batra, Sharma reflected on his early years at Perfetti Van Melle and the excitement of working on advertising campaigns that became part of popular culture.
His marketing philosophy places consumer understanding and powerful creative ideas at the heart of brand communication. While recognising the growing significance of digital platforms, Sharma has emphasised that technology and media channels should amplify strong creative ideas rather than replace them.
This philosophy is particularly relevant to a company whose portfolio includes some of India's most recognisable confectionery brands, including Mentos, Center Fresh, Center Fruit, Happydent and Alpenliebe.
As Managing Director, Sharma's focus extends beyond advertising and brand communication to innovation, distribution expansion, premiumisation and long-term business growth. His leadership comes at a time when India's confectionery market is evolving rapidly, with changing consumer preferences, greater competition and new opportunities across price segments.
In December 2025, Sharma outlined Perfetti Van Melle India's ambition to grow its turnover from approximately ₹4,000 crore to ₹8,500 crore over four years, supported by distribution expansion and a stronger product portfolio.
Beyond his professional responsibilities, Sharma is also known for his interest in fitness and running, reflecting his belief in maintaining a balance between personal well-being and professional commitments.
As he celebrates another birthday, his journey stands as a testament to the value of perseverance, adaptability and continuous learning.
From a young management trainee to a marketing leader, from steering international businesses to leading Perfetti Van Melle's India operations, Sharma's career has come full circle while continuing to evolve.
His story is not merely about climbing the corporate ladder but about embracing new challenges, understanding diverse markets and staying connected to the consumer.
