  • Rohit Jawa, celebrating his birthday on September 18, has a nearly four-decade career in business leadership, culminating in his role as Managing Director and CEO of Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL).
  • His professional journey began in 1988 at Hindustan Lever and included significant leadership roles across various countries, including the Philippines and China, where he contributed to major business transformations.
  • In January 2022, he became Chief of Transformation at Unilever, focusing on organizational redesign and preparing the company for future growth, before returning to India as CEO of HUL in 2023.
  • After stepping down from HUL in July 2025, Jawa joined Bessemer Venture Partners in August 2026, where he will leverage his extensive experience to assist emerging companies in market expansion and brand development.

As Rohit Jawa celebrates his birthday today, September 18, it is an occasion to recognise the journey of a business leader whose career has spanned nearly four decades of building brands, transforming businesses and leading organisations across global markets.

From starting as a management trainee at Hindustan Lever in 1988 to becoming Managing Director and CEO of Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL), Jawa's professional journey has been defined by international experience, strategic thinking and an ability to navigate changing business environments.

An alumnus of St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, and the Faculty of Management Studies, University of Delhi, Jawa also completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School. His academic foundation, combined with extensive experience across diverse markets, helped shape his approach to business leadership.

His career at Unilever took him across India, Vietnam, the Philippines, Singapore, China and the United Kingdom, where he held several senior leadership positions and contributed to the growth of some of the company's most important businesses.

As Chairman and CEO of Unilever Philippines, Jawa led a significant business transformation, strengthening the company's market position and accelerating growth. His leadership journey subsequently took him to China, where he served as Executive Vice President for North Asia and Chairman of Unilever China, helping transform the business into Unilever's third-largest market globally.

In January 2022, Jawa assumed the role of Chief of Transformation at Unilever in London. He played an important role in implementing a major organisational redesign aimed at simplifying operations, strengthening accountability and preparing the multinational for its next phase of growth.

His career came full circle in 2023 when he returned to India to take charge as Managing Director and CEO of Hindustan Unilever and President of Unilever South Asia.

At HUL, Jawa led one of India's largest FMCG businesses through a period of evolving consumer preferences, increasing competition and rapid technological change. His leadership focused on strengthening competitiveness, accelerating digital transformation, driving premiumisation and preparing the company's portfolio for future growth.

Under his leadership, HUL introduced its ASPIRE strategy, centred on unlocking growth opportunities, strengthening brands and building capabilities for the future.

After more than 37 years with Unilever, Jawa stepped down as HUL's Managing Director and CEO on July 31, 2025, handing over the leadership to Priya Nair. His departure marked the conclusion of an extraordinary corporate journey that had taken him from an entry-level management position to the highest levels of leadership within the multinational.

However, his journey of professional reinvention continues.

In August 2026, Jawa joined Bessemer Venture Partners' Operating Advisor Network, marking a new chapter in his career. In this role, he will work with portfolio companies on market expansion, business transformation, brand building, go-to-market strategies and leadership development.

The move brings his extensive experience in building and scaling consumer businesses into the venture capital ecosystem, where emerging companies can benefit from his understanding of brands, distribution, organisational culture and sustainable growth.

What makes Jawa's journey particularly noteworthy is the breadth of his experience. From managing established consumer businesses to leading global transformation initiatives and now advising emerging companies, his career reflects the importance of adaptability and continuous learning.

As he celebrates another birthday, his journey stands as a testament to the value of leadership, resilience and the ability to embrace new opportunities.

From the corridors of Hindustan Lever to the boardrooms of global businesses and now the startup ecosystem, Rohit Jawa continues to build on a career defined by growth and transformation.

Here's wishing him a very happy birthday, continued success, good health and many more milestones in the years ahead.
