Some careers move in straight lines. Sandeep Batra's has moved in continents. On his birthday, we take a moment to trace the arc of a banker who has built consumer businesses on three different landscapes before landing at the helm of HSBC's wealth ambitions in India.
Batra's grounding came at Standard Chartered Bank, where he spent close to seven years working his way up from Management Associate to product and business development roles. That early runway led him to Citi, where he would stay for more than 15 years, moving through consumer risk leadership before taking charge of risk for Citi Thailand's cards and lending business. There, he built partnerships with major e-commerce and digital wallet players, a skill set that would prove valuable in an increasingly digital-first banking world. His Citi journey culminated in a high-stakes assignment as Head of Consumer Banking at Citi Russia, steering the business through a period of significant geopolitical and organisational transition.
In 2022, HSBC brought Batra on board to lead its Wealth and Personal Banking business in India, a market the bank has flagged as a strategic growth priority. The mandate was broad from day one: private banking, retail banking, wealth management, cards, mortgages, personal lending, asset management and insurance, all under one remit. In the years since, Batra has been visible at the centre of HSBC India's expansion, from the relaunch of its onshore private banking business to the opening of the bank's largest India branch, in Bengaluru's Whitefield, which he inaugurated alongside HSBC India CEO Hitendra Dave.
Batra has since taken on an even wider canvas as Head of International Wealth and Premier Banking at HSBC India, where his focus has turned to serving the country's growing base of globally minded, internationally invested clients. Across his public commentary, including his contribution to the India Private Wealth Management Outlook 2026, a throughline is visible: a conviction that Indian wealth clients are only getting more sophisticated, and that the banks that win will be the ones offering integrated, personalised, cross-border advice.
Close to twenty-five years into a career spanning risk, retail and wealth leadership across Asia, Europe and now India, Batra's story remains one of steady reinvention.
