Sanmarg Group has completed the 100% acquisition of Tehelka.com Private Limited from its existing investors in October 2026, marking its entry into the magazine segment and strengthening its presence in the digital media space.
As part of the acquisition, Sanmarg Group has taken over all assets of Tehelka.com, including its print and digital operations and intellectual property held since 2017. The group has also appointed Arvind Chaturvedi as Chief Editor to lead the publication.
According to the group's statement, Tehelka.com's ownership underwent a transition in 2016, when its erstwhile owner, Anant Media Pvt Ltd, transferred the publication's intellectual property, title, employees and operational assets to Tehelka.com Private Limited. Anant Media retained responsibility for all previous litigations, liabilities and legacy-related matters.
The transfer also resulted in Tehelka.com Private Limited losing access to its archives, past footage, old editions, videos and several other intellectual properties and historical records.
In 2017, a group of investors acquired the entire shareholding of Tehelka.com Private Limited and facilitated the exit of founder Tarun Tejpal and other minority investors. The group stated that there had been no fresh litigation since the investors took over and that Tejpal had no involvement in Tehelka or its operations.
Sanmarg Group said it plans to invest further in Tehelka.com, with a focus on restoring the publication's legacy and strengthening its position in investigative journalism. It has also outlined its commitment to editorial integrity, credibility and compliance with applicable government regulations and industry standards.
The group further stated that it would honour the commitments made to Tehelka's 276 founding members, who were enrolled as lifetime subscribers. They will continue to receive print copies and digital subscription access, as applicable.
As part of its plans for the publication, Sanmarg Group intends to transition Tehelka from a fortnightly to a weekly publication.
The acquisition marks Sanmarg Group's entry into the magazine business while adding to its existing presence in online and digital media.
