At the India AI Summit 2026, Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw made a strong case for striking the right balance between innovation and regulation, saying India’s approach will not stifle emerging technologies.

Referring to the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, he said, “If you have seen our DPDP Act, the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, unlike the GDPR template, this is a very balanced template where innovation and regulation are balanced in a very healthy manner.”

Vaishnaw underlined that this model would guide future policies as well. “Same structure we would like to follow in all our regulations where we come out very heavily on the harmful impact but we promote the innovative capabilities and we encourage the use of technologies for solving genuine problems of the society,” he said.

He also highlighted the importance of tech neutrality in policymaking, calling it a crucial principle as India frames rules for fast evolving sectors like artificial intelligence.

The minister’s remarks come at a time when governments across the world are grappling with how to regulate AI without slowing down growth and investment.
