The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting recently defended the country’s legal and institutional frameworks that protect press freedom. This came in response to a query raised in the Rajya Sabha regarding the country’s declining press freedom rankings and reported attacks on journalists.
In a written reply to MP Manoj Kumar Jha, Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting, Dr. L. Murugan, stated that India hosts a “vibrant press and media ecosystem,” with nearly 145,000 registered publications and thousands of digital news outlets, including print, online, and broadcasting platforms.
Dr. Murugan emphasized that India’s Constitution guarantees freedom of speech and expression.
He also cited several mechanisms in place to support media freedom.
The statement comes amid ongoing debate over the safety of journalists and media autonomy in India, with advocacy groups raising alarm over reported legal harassment and growing constraints on reporting.
