The Parliament is set to question the MIB on August 20 over the state of India’s television ratings framework, with several MPs demanding clarity on reforms.

This comes in the wake of MIB’s decision to open up the television ratings market to multiple agencies. Some MPs have reportedly flagged that the TRP-centric model will still "incentivise sensationalism".

TRP Overhaul Push

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting's proposal to allow multiple television rating agencies in India has triggered cautious reactions across the broadcast and advertising industries.

While the draft policy—released on July 2—aims to boost competition and modernise measurement standards, several senior stakeholders are raising concerns over the funding.

More on MIB's proposal

MIB had raise concerns that the audience measurement technology at present does not sufficiently capture the complexity and diversity of India’s television viewership. It had proposed sweeping amendments to overhaul the country’s TRP (television rating points) system.

The move comes amid rapid changes in how audiences consume content—spanning traditional cable, satellite, connected TVs (CTVs), and mobile streaming. Yet, the legacy measurement framework has failed to keep pace.

The MIB’s draft amendments to the 2014 “Policy Guidelines for Television Rating Agencies,” released on July 2, 2025, aim to modernise the audience measurement ecosystem, reduce entry barriers, and encourage fair competition. With a 30-day window open for public feedback, these proposals may mark the beginning of a long-overdue shift towards a more transparent, inclusive, and technologically advanced system.
