Today, as Milee Ashwarya celebrates her birthday, it is also a moment to reflect on her remarkable journey in Indian publishing- a journey that has given wings to countless voices and reshaped how stories from India are told and received.
An alumna of Hindu College, Delhi University, with a degree in English Literature, Ashwarya entered publishing with a mix of passion, discipline and curiosity that would soon become her signature. Over the years, she has risen through the ranks to become Publisher of the Adult Publishing Group at Penguin Random House India, where she oversees an enviable catalogue across imprints such as Ebury, Vintage, Penguin Business and others. Her editorial eye has brought to shelves an extraordinary range of fiction, non-fiction, business books, memoirs and lifestyle titles, cementing her reputation as one of the most influential figures in Indian publishing today.
She has worked with some of the finest voices in global and Indian literature, from Orhan Pamuk and Salman Rushdie to Sudha Murty and Devdutt Pattanaik, while simultaneously championing debut authors and underrepresented voices. Her lists reflect a deep commitment to diversity and inclusion, ensuring that the richness of India’s cultural and social fabric finds expression in print.
Her career has also been defined by her ability to sense cultural shifts and respond to them through publishing. Whether it is memoirs that capture the spirit of personal resilience, feminist writings that challenge conventions, or initiatives like Penguin Veer that honour the stories of India’s armed forces, she has consistently widened the scope of what Indian readers can access.
In a rapidly evolving landscape, she has embraced the challenges of digital formats, changing reader behaviour, and the demand for more inclusive storytelling. Her leadership reflects the belief that books are not just products, but powerful vessels of thought, identity, and discovery.
