Few names in Indian film journalism command the kind of respect and recognition that Anupama Chopra does. As she celebrates another year, her career remains a testament to her dedication to the art of storytelling—both as a critic and a chronicler of cinema. Over the years, she has worn multiple hats: journalist, author, editor, and entrepreneur, carving out a niche in an industry that is constantly evolving.

She is currently the Editor of The Hollywood Reporter India.

Anupama Chopra’s journey in film journalism began with a strong academic foundation. She pursued a Master’s in Journalism from Northwestern University, equipping herself with the skills to navigate the dynamic world of media. Her career took off in the early 1990s, and she quickly became a prominent voice in Hindi cinema reportage. Through the years, she has written extensively about the film industry for leading publications, both in India and internationally, including The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, India Today, and Vogue India.

Her first book, Sholay: The Making of a Classic, won the National Film Award for Best Book on Cinema in 2001, cementing her reputation as not just a critic but also an astute documentarian of Indian cinema’s most celebrated works. She followed this up with books like King of Bollywood: Shah Rukh Khan and the Seductive World of Indian Cinema, offering insights into the larger-than-life persona of Bollywood’s megastar, and 100 Films to See Before You Die, a curated guide for cinephiles.

While she made a name for herself in print, Chopra also seamlessly transitioned to television and digital platforms. She hosted Picture This on NDTV 24x7 and the widely followed Front Row with Anupama Chopra on Star World, where she interviewed some of the most influential names in the entertainment industry. In 2014, she launched Film Companion, a digital-first platform that has since become a leading voice in film criticism, analysis, and industry conversations. The platform’s success lies in its ability to cater to evolving audience preferences, balancing in-depth critique with audience-friendly content.

Her ability to bridge the gap between the industry and audiences has also seen her take on leadership roles, such as being the festival director of the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival from 2015 to 2023. This role allowed her to shape a significant cultural event that celebrates global cinema while giving Indian independent films a larger platform.

What makes Anupama Chopra’s work stand out is her nuanced understanding of the industry. Unlike critics who merely rate films, she delves deeper into the craft, the storytelling, and the context in which cinema exists. Her critiques, while honest, never fall into sensationalism or unnecessary harshness. This balance has earned her the trust of both audiences and industry professionals, making her a rare voice that commands credibility on both ends.

Her books and articles often reflect a blend of academic rigor and journalistic insight. She has an eye for recognizing cultural trends, industry shifts, and the changing landscape of audience consumption. Even as Bollywood has moved from single-screen theaters to streaming platforms, her observations have remained relevant and insightful.

As she celebrates another year, Anupama Chopra’s legacy continues to evolve. Whether it is through Film Companion, her books, or her interviews, she remains committed to fostering meaningful conversations around cinema. In an era where film criticism is often reduced to soundbites and sensationalism, her work is a reminder of the value of thoughtful analysis and informed critique.

Here’s to another year of insightful storytelling, engaging discussions, and a career that continues to inspire cinephiles and journalists alike.
