  • Meta has launched Facebook Verified, a free verification feature aimed at helping users identify authentic profiles amidst the rise of AI-generated content on social media.
  • The feature requires users aged 18 and above to submit a short selfie video for verification, which typically takes a few minutes, and will initially be visible in high-trust areas like Marketplace and Dating.
  • Facebook Verified is part of a broader industry trend emphasizing identity verification to combat issues such as impersonation, scams, and misinformation, especially as AI technology makes it easier to create realistic synthetic identities.
  • While the badge indicates a verified user, Meta clarifies that it does not endorse the user's credibility or behavior, and verified accounts must still adhere to the platform's Community Standards.

As artificial intelligence blurs the line between authentic and synthetic identities online, Meta has unveiled Facebook Verified, a free verification feature designed to help users distinguish between real people and AI-generated or inauthentic profiles on Facebook.

The rollout comes at a time when AI-generated content is flooding social media platforms. From AI influencers and virtual personalities to fully automated content channels, synthetic accounts are attracting millions of views, generating high engagement and, in some cases, monetising audiences at scale. While these developments have unlocked new creative possibilities, they have also intensified concerns around impersonation, scams, misinformation and the growing difficulty of identifying genuine users.

Against this backdrop, Meta's latest move signals a broader industry shift where identity verification is becoming as important as content moderation.

Unlike the company's paid Meta Verified subscription, Facebook Verified is free. The feature uses a short selfie video to match a user's face against existing profile photos. Eligible users aged 18 and above who comply with Meta's Community Standards and show no signs of inauthentic behaviour can receive the badge after verification, which Meta says typically takes only a few minutes.

Initially, the badge will appear across high-trust interactions including Marketplace, Dating, Groups and user profiles, with plans to extend it to Feed posts over time. The company is rolling out the feature in phases across select markets before expanding globally.

Meta said the badge serves as a visible indicator that the profile belongs to a real person who has completed its verification process. However, it clarified that verification should not be interpreted as an endorsement of a user's credibility or behaviour. Verified accounts will continue to be governed by the platform's Community Standards and other existing policies.

The announcement reflects a larger challenge confronting social media platforms. As generative AI dramatically lowers the cost of creating realistic profiles, images, videos and conversations, users are increasingly finding it difficult to differentiate between human interaction and machine-generated engagement.

Industry observers say this could make identity verification a foundational layer of digital trust. While AI-generated creators and virtual personalities are expected to remain a growing part of the creator economy, platforms are now under mounting pressure to provide clear signals that help users understand who—or what—they are interacting with.

For Meta, Facebook Verified is less about limiting AI and more about preserving confidence in human interactions, signalling that in an AI-first internet, proving authenticity may become just as important as creating content.
