The government is examining additional measures to strengthen online safety for children and women and curb misleading advertisements on digital platforms, Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw said in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

Responding to a question raised by a member, Vaishnaw said the safety of children and women on social media platforms is a key priority for the government, particularly as digital platforms continue to expand their reach across society.

He further noted that risks can arise both from AI-generated material as well as content posted by publishers and users on social media platforms.

“The safety of children on all social media platforms, safety of women, and protection against misleading advertisements are very important issues. We have to take all the steps which are required for ensuring the safety of our children and the entire society on digital platforms, whether it is AI-generated material or material posted by publishers on social media platforms,” Vaishnaw said.

The minister also acknowledged the work of the parliamentary committee that studied the issue and examined the need for a new framework to address emerging risks in the digital ecosystem. He said the panel conducted an extensive study on the need to rethink the approach to citizen safety on digital platforms.
