Writing Help, an AI-powered service that lets users reword, edit, and change the tone of their messages before sending them, has been released by WhatsApp. The feature is positioned as an in-app substitute for outside AI services like ChatGPT, and the Meta-owned company confirmed the deployment on Wednesday.

The tool provides AI-generated recommendations that may be used to reword a message or make it sound funny, professional, encouraging, or just different. The simple admonition, "Please don't leave dirty socks on the sofa," was changed into amusing variations in one presentation, such as "Hey, sock ninja, the laundry basket is that way" and "Please don't make the sofa a sock graveyard."

While writing a message, a new pencil symbol displays, which users can tap to get Writing Help. The tool only supports English at this time and is only being rolled out in a few places.

The feature's primary objective is still privacy. According to WhatsApp, Meta's Private Processing technology powers Writing Help, guaranteeing that neither Meta nor WhatsApp can access the AI-generated recommendations or the original message. End-to-end encryption is still used for messages, allaying worries about data access.

WhatsApp seems to be competing with stand-alone AI solutions that users could otherwise rely on for message drafting by integrating AI writing functionality straight into the app. The business did admit, though, that some people might want to have genuine discussions, especially when speaking with friends and family.

WhatsApp continues to prioritize user privacy while extending its AI-powered capabilities with this release.
