At the India AI Impact Summit 2026 on 17 February, Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw issued a clear warning about the growing threat of deepfakes, calling for far stronger regulations to protect society.
“I think it is a problem which is growing day by day and certainly there is a need for protecting our children, protecting our society from these harms,” Vaishnaw said, underlining the urgency of the issue.
He revealed that the government has already begun discussions with stakeholders. “We have initiated a dialogue with the industry already on this. What type of regulation would be needed beyond what we have already, beyond the steps that we have already taken up,” he said.
Vaishnaw added that the matter has also been examined at the parliamentary level. “Even our IT committee of the parliament have studied this issue and they have also made certain recommendations,” he noted.
Calling for bipartisan support, the minister said, “We need much stronger regulation on these things and we definitely must create that consensus within the parliament for creating those significantly stronger restrictions on these things so that the society can be protected from these harms.”
His remarks signal that tighter rules on deepfakes could be on the horizon.
