A pointed on-stage exchange between senior journalist Rajdeep Sardesai and American political activist Laura Loomer at the India Today Conclave has spilled into a wider online controversy, after videos of their confrontation circulated widely across television and digital platforms.
The exchange occurred during a session featuring Loomer, known for her far-right political activism and controversial public statements. Toward the close of the interaction, Sardesai intervened from the audience and questioned Loomer over several past remarks, including earlier comments on US Vice President Kamala Harris and statements that had drawn criticism from Indian audiences.
In the video clips that have since gone viral, Sardesai described some of Loomer’s earlier remarks as “brazenly racist and Islamophobic,” arguing that such rhetoric had no place in public discourse. Loomer pushed back during the exchange, rejecting the criticism and reiterating her views on Islam and free speech, while maintaining that the term “Islamophobia” is often used to silence dissenting opinions.
The moment quickly gained traction online, with short excerpts from the session widely shared across social media platforms and amplified by television channels and digital publishers. Within hours, the confrontation became a trending topic, with commentators debating both the substance of the exchange and the tone of the intervention.
The controversy intensified after Loomer responded in a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), accusing Sardesai of bias and alleging double standards in his criticism. In her response, she also shared an older video clip involving journalist Mehdi Hasan, which further broadened the debate and drew additional reactions from commentators across ideological lines. Reports noted that Loomer described Sardesai as an “Islam sympathiser,” while reiterating her earlier positions.
The incident has generated extensive coverage across media platforms, with reactions ranging from support for Sardesai’s questioning of Loomer’s past statements to criticism of the confrontational nature of the exchange.
