As India marks its 77th Republic Day on Monday, The Hindu has brought out a specially curated collector’s edition of its historic January 26, 1950, issue. This landmark edition captures the birth of the Indian Republic and stands as a powerful archival artefact, documenting a defining moment in the nation’s democratic journey.
While the original issue, priced at eight annas, ran to 126 pages with a collection of messages, photographs and articles, the current curated version has 62 pages, and is divided into two sections, making it convenient for readers. The newspaper, which chronicles the formal inauguration of the Republic of India—featuring the swearing-in of Dr. Rajendra Prasad as the country’s first President and the first Prime Minister of independent India, Jawaharlal Nehru’s address marking the dawn of constitutional governance—has been made available on Blinkit at ₹300 per copy.
Rich in visual and editorial content, the edition features nearly 90 photographs, including a full-page photo feature. Among the highlights is coverage of India’s Republic Day state guest, Indonesian President Sukarno, being welcomed by Prime Minister Nehru.
The collection of photographs includes those of Mahatma Gandhi having breakfast at Wardha; the Father of the Nation sharing a joke with Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Nehru presenting a silver plate bearing the signatures of all Cabinet Ministers to C. Rajagopalachari at a farewell hosted by Ministers on January 22; and Nehru signing the Constitution document during the final session of the Constituent Assembly on January 24.
The issue also features two political cartoons, including one by legendary British cartoonist Sir David Low, adding to its international and artistic significance. It carries congratulatory messages from world leaders, including U.S. President Harry Truman and Lord Mountbatten, reflecting India’s emergence on the global stage.
Among the notable articles are Power Vs Service by Dr. Pattabhi Sitaramayya; Fine Record of Indian Press by Prof. John Coatman; Spotlight on Film Industry by T. M. Ramachandran; River Valley Projects by A. R. Venkatachari; and Great Indian cricketers: Memories of Duleep and Pataudi by George Duckworth.
The edition offers authoritative commentary on the Constitution, reflections on Gandhian philosophy, and insights into India’s early worldview as a newly sovereign nation. Interesting period advertisements— such as a pharmacy offering a discount to commemorate the occasion—and cultural listings further enhance its nostalgic appeal, offering readers a vivid window into the social and economic life of the era.
