In his welcome address on the first day of the India Today Conclave 2026, Aroon Purie, India Today Group Chairman and Editor-in-Chief, expressed concern over the current global situation, saying that the world is going through a period where technological advancement and global instability are coexisting.
Keeping the theme of the conclave as 'Breakthrough and Breakdown', Purie said that on one hand, humanity is experiencing a major technological revolution like Artificial Intelligence (AI), on the other hand, the threat of war and weakening of the global order is also increasing.
According to him, this contradiction has become the defining characteristic of our times. He said that while scientific discovery, technological capabilities, and economic power are advancing rapidly, institutions are weakening and the influence of global norms is diminishing. He also said that even though artificial intelligence is transforming every aspect of life, human tendencies remain trapped in old patterns of conflict.
Aroon Purie also emphasized that the world has entered a time where progress and crisis are occurring simultaneously. According to him, any small diplomatic or technical mistake can undo years of progress. He also mentioned climate change, declining trust in institutions, and the challenges facing democracy, saying that when dissent is perceived as a lack of loyalty and facts become "optional," democracy gradually weakens.
