OpenAI has found itself in a legal whirlwind after major digital news agencies have decided to join the ongoing legal lawsuit against OpenAI’s use of copyrighted material. The digital arm of Hindustan Times, Indian Express, NDTV, along with Digital News Publishers Association (DNPA) has sought intervention along with ANI who was the first to file the lawsuit, according to media reports.

Network 18, Zee News, and India Today Group and all DNPA members are involved in the intervention. However, the Times Group, also a DNPA member, has chosen not to participate. As per media reports, media houses have filed a lawsuit for OpenAI’s use of ‘copyrighted content’.

One of the media agencies accessed the lawsuit document that referred to OpenAI's "wilful scraping ... and adaptation of content".

ANI filed a lawsuit against OpenAI last year in a Delhi court accusing the ChatGPT creator of using its published content without permission. ANI further claimed that the AI giant has been using its content to train the chatbot.

Last year, a media house reported that an OpenAI spokesperson stated the company's compliance with legal precedents. He said, "We build our AI models using publicly available data, in a manner protected by fair use and related principles, and supported by long-standing and widely accepted legal precedents".
