OpenAI has hired its first chief marketing officer to elevate its position in the AI space. Kate Rouch will lead all marketing efforts at OpenAI, including the company’s initiatives to further develop AI as a powerful tool for individuals and enterprises. Previously, Rouch held the CMO position at Coinbase.
“The Coinbase journey proves that smart marketing can transform brand into an asymmetrical business advantage for frontier tech companies – in good times, and bad times,” Rouch wrote on X, calling it her inspiration for the move to OpenAI.
Sharing a glimpse into her work at Coinbase, she wrote: “Working here is the hardest and the greatest thing I’ve ever done. With the toughest and smartest people I know. Over the past 3 years we’ve been tested. Financially. Legally. Reputationally. Politically. We’ve risen to the challenge. Bravely. Formidably.”
She also called crypto and AI complementary technologies, signally that the shift is a natural progression in her career. Coinbase is an online platform that facilitates the buying, selling, transferring and storing of cryptocurrency.
Reporting to Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap, Rouch will reportedly help expand the marketing team at OpenAI — to ensure it includes a good mix of brand marketers and researchers.
Prior to joining Coinbase in 2021 as the company’s first CMO, Rouch spent 11 years at Meta working on brand and product marketing for its portfolio of brands including Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and the Facebook app. At Coinbase, she was responsible for all global brand, product and performance marketing efforts.
