Instagram is rolling out a new reset algorithm feature that lets users wipe the slate clean when it comes to content recommendations across Explore, Reels, and Feed. While this is a welcome change for users seeking a fresh start, it poses unique challenges and opportunities for marketers who rely on Instagram's recommendation engine to target their audience effectively.

Reset, refresh, repeat: What’s new?

The reset tool allows users to clear their personalized recommendations, effectively forcing Instagram to treat their account as brand new. The platform will gradually repersonalize content based on the user’s new interactions. Users also have the option to review and unfollow accounts that no longer interest them. This move is part of Meta’s broader safety initiative aimed at giving teens—and all users—more control over their digital experiences.

Adam Mosseri, Instagram's head, has cautioned against frequent use of the feature, as it could initially lead to a less engaging experience. "It’s going to make your Instagram much less interesting at first because we’re going to treat you as if we know nothing about your interests,” Mosseri said in a recent video post.

Marketing gold or algorithmic black hole?

  1. Fresh Opportunities for Brand Discovery:
The reset feature essentially levels the playing field, allowing marketers to reach users who may have been disengaged due to stale or overly familiar content. It gives brands an opportunity to attract a newly reset audience by leveraging high-quality, engaging content.
  2. More Authentic Engagement:
With users consciously reshaping their content preferences, marketers might find it easier to reach genuinely interested audiences. This could lead to better engagement rates, as users interact with content that aligns with their refreshed interests.
  3. Chance to Re-Evaluate Strategies:
The reset feature could prompt marketers to revisit their strategies. With users seeking personalized, relevant content, brands may need to double down on authenticity and creativity to stay top-of-mind.

The Challenges Ahead

  1. Loss of Established Audience Insights:
For marketers heavily reliant on Instagram’s algorithm to deliver content to a well-defined audience, resets could disrupt targeting. A reset user may suddenly drop out of an audience segment, requiring marketers to invest more in retargeting and segmentation.
  2. Greater Competition in a Reset Feed:
As Instagram repersonalizes recommendations post-reset, competition for visibility will increase. Brands may need to invest more in paid promotions to ensure they appear in these “blank slate” feeds.
  3. Unpredictable Audience Behavior:
Resets could make audience behavior more volatile and less predictable. Historical data about user preferences might lose its relevance, challenging marketers to stay agile and adapt to shifting trends.

Adapting to the Reset Era

Industry experts highlight that the reset feature’s influence on Explore and Reels means marketers must prioritise crafting highly shareable and visually captivating content tailored specifically for these sections. Tapping into trends and employing creative storytelling will be essential to capturing attention and driving engagement within this refreshed content ecosystem.

Furthermore, as users reassess their following lists during a reset, brands must focus on retaining followers by consistently providing value. Regular updates, authentic connections, and meaningful interactions can help brands avoid being culled during the reset process.

Experts also recommend investing in first-party data strategies to navigate the unpredictability of the recalibrated algorithms. By leveraging email databases, loyalty programmes, and website interactions, marketers can sustain strong connections with their audience independently of platform-driven recommendations.

Additionally, Instagram’s existing curating tools, such as “Close Friends,” Favourites, and the Following Feed, are becoming increasingly crucial for visibility. Encouraging followers to add brands to their Favourites list ensures higher placement in feeds, even amidst the changes brought by a reset.

While the reset tool introduces uncertainty, it also reaffirms a universal truth in marketing: the importance of building genuine connections with your audience. As users navigate their fresh starts, brands that align with their evolving interests stand to gain the most.
