Some people you come to know entirely through a professional stencil. The client-agency relationship hands you the outline and asks you to see the person through it.
Across the table sit the credentials, a deck, some numbers, the quarterly rhythm of review and renewal. Whatever reaches you arrives much shaped, trimmed to the professional cut-out, framed before you ever translate it for yourself. You meet a person’s role a long while before you meet the man.
I have known Shashi Sinha throughout my career. By sheer happenstance, I have had the good fortune of knowing him almost wholly outside that stencil. Never as a client.
Somehow, we never shared a mandate.
So, the Shashi I can write about is the one the professional outline usually keeps just out of frame.
The framed figure is familiar to everyone, and deservedly so. He founded Lodestar when a specialised media agency was still an idea running ahead of its market. He led IPG Mediabrands in India from its 2012 entry through to the Omnicom merger and grew it into one of the country’s most formidable networks. He helped steward the institutions we all take for granted, such as BARC, The Ad Club, and the ABC, chairing them with an ‘elder in the room’ temperament rather than a partisan urgency.
An engineer from IIT Kanpur, an MBA from IIM Bangalore, honoured with the e4m Media Ace Lifetime Achievement Award in 2024, among many other accolades. That is the shape the stencil permits, and indeed, it is a formidable one.
The man I have watched in the spaces the outline leaves out carries something the frame cannot reveal.
In jury rooms, on councils, across the long, unhurried conversations that happen over many drinks, once the formal agenda has been retired, a different Shashi shows himself.
He listens longer than most people in the room think is efficient, and it turns out he was right to.
He has a way of holding a strong view lightly, arguing it hard, then conceding the better point with a grace that costs him nothing and teaches everyone else a great deal.
We have discussed politics, regional attitudes, young consumers, and the shape of the media economy, laughing a lot along the way.
What the client-agency table can never show you is his patience and generosity. In settings where he owed no one anything, I have watched him give his full attention to people who could do nothing for him.
In my observation, he treats a career the way he treats a media plan… as a long game, built on institutions and patience rather than the quick win.
He has a fantastic memory, and we could pick up conversations where we had left off, even after a gap of months or years.
That, finally, is the difference the stencil obscures. The industry has been served by his intellect, his data-led rigour, his long-term thinking, and his refusal of the fashionable shortcut.
Those who have known him off the record have equally been served by his character.
The two turn out to be the same discipline, just in different rooms.
He steps away from Omnicom having contributed immensely to how a nation plans, buys, and measures its media.
I suspect he would rather be remembered for the smaller, unframed things — the counsel offered gently, the door held open, the standard kept when no one was scoring.
I only ever knew him outside the frame.
I think it was the better view.
