Shashi Sinha 2.0: The restart of an extraordinary industry statesman

There are very few people in any industry who become institutions in themselves. Shashi Sinha is one of them.

Shashi ji, as almost everyone in our industry fondly calls him, has been among the most respected, admired and trusted leaders in Indian media and advertising for over four decades. He has built organisations, nurtured leaders, shaped institutions, and, perhaps most importantly, built relationships that have endured across generations.

When exchange4media broke the story of Shashi ji moving on from Omnicom Media Group, my phone did not stop ringing. The question everyone asked was the same: What next for Shashi ji?

Some even wondered whether this meant he was retiring.

My answer was simple. I don't see this as an ending. I see it as a restart. I believe we are about to witness Shashi Sinha 2.0, and I have little doubt that the industry will welcome this new chapter with the same affection, curiosity and respect it has always shown him.

Much has already been written about Shashi ji's stature and his immense contribution to our industry. Every accolade he has received is well deserved. He has earned admiration not only because of what he has built professionally, but because of the way he has treated people throughout his remarkable journey.

For me, however, Shashi ji is best understood through a few personal memories.

The Leader Behind the Leader

I first met Shashi ji nearly 25 years ago, around the time we were building exchange4media. Nearly two decades ago, he invited me to his home. I met Shashi ji and Ina ji and spent an evening that I still remember with great fondness. It was warm, effortless and completely unpretentious.

That evening explained a great deal about the man.

I saw not just one of the industry's tallest leaders, but also a devoted family man whose kindness came naturally. The warmth with which he welcomed me laid the foundation of a friendship built on trust. It reminded me that true leadership is reflected as much in the way one lives as in the way one leads.

The second memory involves my senior colleague, Noor Warsia.

Around nine years into Noor's journey with us at exchange4media, Shashi ji called me one day. There was no agenda, no demand and no attempt to influence me. He simply said, very politely, that Noor was an exceptional professional and that I should do everything possible to address her concerns and retain her.

I listened.

Today, Noor and I have completed more than 23 years of working together across exchange4media and BW Businessworld. Looking back, I often think about that conversation. Great leaders do not just build organisations. They quietly help other leaders build theirs too. They recognise talent, encourage people and strengthen institutions, often without seeking any credit. That was, and remains, Shashi ji.

A Mentor, A Friend, A Constant

Another memory takes me back a few years, when I wrote a column questioning the impact of landing pages on television ratings. The article generated strong reactions. Some disagreed sharply, some sent legal notices and many expressed their displeasure.

Shashi ji called me and said he wanted to meet.

I offered to come wherever he was, but he insisted on coming to my hotel instead. For the next two hours, he patiently walked me through the technical nuances of broadcast audience measurement and explained how BARC had worked to normalise the impact of landing pages.

He was not trying to win an argument.

He simply wanted to ensure I understood the issue completely before arriving at a lasting conclusion. That generosity of knowledge is rare. He believed that understanding always came before opinion, and that conversation was far more productive than confrontation.

There is another conversation with Shashi ji that remains etched in my memory. It had nothing to do with business, ratings or advertising. It was simply about life. At a time when I needed perspective, he offered advice, reassurance and quiet wisdom. It is one of those conversations that stays with you long after the words themselves fade.

That, perhaps, is Shashi Sinha's greatest quality.

His kindness.

His generosity.

His willingness to make time.

His instinct to guide rather than judge.

Those qualities have touched far more people than any designation ever could.

I do not know exactly what Shashi ji will choose to do next. Knowing his interests, it could involve health and well-being. It could be something at the intersection of analytics, research and data. Or it could be something none of us has imagined yet.

Whatever direction he chooses, I have little doubt that his knowledge, relationships, wisdom and empathy will once again create meaningful impact.

His trademark smile, his unmistakable baritone and his reassuring presence have been constants in our industry for decades. They will continue to inspire confidence, comfort and optimism wherever he goes next.

The industry has benefited enormously from Shashi Sinha over the last four decades. I have been fortunate to know him not only as one of its finest leaders, but also as a generous friend whose counsel has shaped many journeys, including mine.

Today, I simply want to express my gratitude.

Like countless others in our industry, I look forward to Shashi Sinha 2.0. This is not the closing of an extraordinary career. It is the restart of an extraordinary industry statesman, and I have no doubt that his next chapter will be as impactful as the last.
