- Shashi Sinha, a prominent leader in the Indian media industry, has announced his departure after nearly three decades of service, primarily with Omnicom, Ulka, and IPG.
- He is recognized for his significant contributions to media practices and professional standards in India, as well as for nurturing a generation of leaders in the field.
- Sinha is remembered for his approachable and humble demeanor, often prioritizing the well-being of others and maintaining accessibility despite his success.
- Following his departure, it is anticipated that he will focus on creating opportunities for students and contributing to the community, continuing his legacy of giving back to the industry.
The industry has undoubtedly lost one of its most significant leaders. Shashi Sinha has spent nearly three decades building one of the country's largest and most respected media organizations. While his departure marks the end of an era for Omnicom, I believe his next chapter will ultimately benefit the industry and society at large, given the immense contributions he has already made across the media ecosystem.
One of my earliest memories of Shashi Sir goes back to 1997, when I had just begun my career as an executive. At the time, he was with Ulka, and despite being a senior leader handling some of the country's biggest clients, he was always willing to help even the youngest professionals. I vividly remember him facilitating an entire meeting and taking a group of us to meet Amul, one of his most valued clients, at Anand in Gujarat. Even then, what stood out wasn't just his stature, but his thoughtfulness. In those days, long before mobile phones became commonplace, he made sure we were comfortable while travelling from Ahmedabad to Anand. His attention to people was remarkable.
Over the years, that quality never changed. Despite all his achievements, recognition and success, he remained exceptionally grounded and humble. He was always approachable. Whether through a phone call or a WhatsApp message, he would almost always find the time to respond. That accessibility speaks volumes about the culture he embodied and the example he set for everyone around him.
Across different stages of my career, I had the opportunity to work alongside him through various industry associations and initiatives. I am certain I am not alone in saying that he has touched hundreds of lives in countless ways. He didn't just build businesses; he built people.
Shashi Sir played a defining role in shaping many of the media practices and professional standards that the Indian media industry follows today. Much of what we consider best practices has been influenced by his leadership. More importantly, he nurtured a generation of leaders. Professionals such as Arpit Amin, Nandini Dias and several others are part of the legacy he leaves behind.
After spending close to 28 to 30 years across Ulka, IPG and Omnicom, the industry owes him a deep sense of gratitude for everything he has built. At the same time, I am confident that what lies ahead for him will be equally meaningful. I believe he will dedicate more time to creating opportunities for students, contributing to the community and giving back to the industry in new ways.
It is difficult to describe Shashi Sir in a single word. All I can say is that he is one of the finest people our media industry has had. He is soft-spoken, deeply caring and incredibly generous with his time. At a stage where many leaders become difficult to access, he remained approachable and easy to engage with.
On a personal note, despite all his accomplishments, I would often find him travelling in economy class. We would end up sitting together, chatting through the journey like any two colleagues. That simplicity stayed with him throughout.
If I had to remember Shashi Sinha, I would remember him as someone who led with humility, cared deeply for people and possessed one of the biggest hearts our industry has ever seen.
