BIG FM has applied to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB), Government of India, for permission to launch six new digital-first broadcast news channels. Alongside the acquisition of Sapphire Media’s existing news business, including India Daily 24x7, the proposed expansion marks a significant step in BIG FM’s plans to strengthen its presence in news broadcasting and build a national news network under BIG News Network.
Building on its existing news operations, BIG News Network aims to combine the reach of broadcast with the scale and accessibility of digital platforms. The proposed channels will focus on timely and accurate news and credible reporting. Alongside this, the company will focus on hyperlocal and vernacular news content, regional perspectives and micro-content formats tailored for digital consumption, with the ambition of building one of India’s largest news networks.
The initiative aligns with BIG FM’s broader vision for ONE BIG WORLD, its AI-powered integrated media ecosystem, bringing together radio, news, digital platforms, digital out-of-home (DOOH) media and live experiences. The proposed expansion will strengthen the news vertical within this wider ecosystem and extend its reach across platforms and markets.
Commenting on the development, Ashit Kukian, CEO, BIG FM, said, “We see a strong opportunity to grow our presence in the news broadcasting space by bringing together our existing capabilities and new digital-first formats. As audience preferences evolve, our focus is on making news more accessible, relevant and engaging across platforms, languages and regional markets. This expansion is an important step in growing our news business and strengthening its role within the broader ONE BIG WORLD ecosystem.”
The proposed expansion reflects BIG FM’s focus on building a stronger national and regional presence while exploring opportunities across regional markets and languages.
