I suddenly started seeing a slew of posts in e4m about Shashi Sinha, and I was wondering what had prompted them. It didn’t take long to realise they were celebrating his remarkable career as he officially retires from Omnicom.
People have written about his leadership, his ability to look beyond numbers, his contribution to the industry, and his humility.
I have no reason to disagree. But I rarely write congratulatory posts based on reputation or what others say. If I write about something or someone, it is always because they have left me with a lived experience that has stayed with me. With Shashi, there are two such moments.
The first was when I decided to help Channel Factory enter India.
For over three decades, I had always been on the buyer’s side of the table. Suddenly, I found myself selling to the very people I had spent my career on the same side of the table with. I reached out to the heads of most major agencies.
Some chose to deal with a meeting request over WhatsApp itself. Some left me wondering what the blue ticks really meant.
Shashi was different.
Despite never having worked together, he immediately agreed to meet. He invited Amar and Harish to join us as well. At the end of the meeting, he simply turned to them and said, “Let’s support Yesu.”
Those four words were worth far more than any release order.
The business followed, and Interactive Avenues will always remain a special name in Channel Factory India’s journey because it was the very first client they ever billed.
The second memory came when I was organising a session in Kerala on how technology was changing the relationship between brands and consumers. I was reaching out to national industry leaders to speak.
Shashi didn’t make me wait. He agreed immediately. When I offered to fly him down, he politely declined and said he would take care of his own travel. He came, spoke brilliantly, and made the event richer simply by being there.
We don’t speak often. We haven’t worked together. Yet every interaction has carried the same warmth, generosity and quiet grace.
If this is what he extended to someone with whom he had no professional history, I can only imagine the impact he has had on the thousands who worked alongside him over the years.
Shashi, congratulations on an extraordinary innings. I wish you good health, peace of mind, and many fulfilling years ahead.
While retirement marks the end of a chapter, wisdom doesn’t retire. It is, of course, Omnicom’s decision, but I can’t help feeling they would have continued to benefit from his counsel, particularly in nurturing people. In a world where technology is rapidly becoming a great leveller, investing in people and culture will remain one of the few enduring differentiators for agencies, as I have always been saying.
And if you’re reading this, Shashi, please keep some time aside for me. I’ll be reaching out soon. There is something close to my heart that I believe you would enjoy being a part of, and I would value your counsel immensely.
