The government has taken stringent action against television channels over content violations in the past five years, with more than 140 cases registered under the Programme and Advertising Codes. This was stated by Dr. L. Murugan, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, in a recent written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha.
Dr Murugan highlighted that during Operation Sindoor, certain TV news channels aired sensational and unverified reports, creating panic among viewers, particularly those with family or acquaintances in affected areas. To ensure responsible reporting, the government had withheld Television Rating Points (TRPs) for four weeks, putting pressure on channels to follow proper journalistic standards.
Under the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995, all private TV channels are required to adhere to content rules. These prohibit programmes that contain obscenity, attacks on any religion or community, offensive or communal content, or material that defames individuals or groups.
Advertisements are also regulated under strict codes, barring any indecent, offensive, suggestive, or derogatory content.
Dr. Murugan also noted that regulatory oversight extends beyond television. Print media adheres to the Press Council of India’s Code of Conduct, while digital media is governed by the IT Rules, 2021, which include a three-tier complaint redressal mechanism.
The government reiterated that it continues to monitor all media platforms and ensure compliance with regulations to prevent violations.
