In an obvious attempt to cut costs, newspaper giant Times of India has closed down its two non-profitable city supplements - Ahmedabad Times and Baroda Times.
Times of India has been coming out with its daily city supplements from its publishing centnres of Delhi, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Patna, Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Baroda, Calcutta and Hyderabad. In fact Calcutta Times and Hyderabad Times were introduced recently as the two editions were launched only last year.
Only a couple of months back, the newspaper had reduced the frequency of East Delhi Plus and West Delhi Plus (neighbourhood supplements) from three a week to one issue a week to cut down the operational expenses because of the ad crunch. Last year, a weekly business supplement focusing on NCR ''Times Business Opportunities'' was shut down within months of its launch, as it did not make any business sense.
And now following the footsteps of its rival Hindustan Times, The Times of India is getting ready to launch a sleek, internationally compact sized edition from May 15. This ''new look'' Times of India will result in about 12 percent saving to the organisation in terms of newsprint cost.
