Previously, when playing a YouTube video through Android Auto, users could hear the audio through the car’s speakers but had no playback controls options within the infotainment unit itself. That meant reaching for the phone every time you wanted to pause, skip, or resume which is not ideal while driving.

Reportedly, YouTube has introduced support for background playback controls on Android Auto, giving drivers a more seamless way to manage audio content directly from their vehicle’s infotainment system.

The update integrates YouTube into the platform’s standard media widget, where users can now play, pause, or skip forward to the next video without needing to interact with their phone.

There are Limitations

According to reports, this feature does not display video on the car screen or offer browsing options. Instead, it treats YouTube playback as an audio stream, similar to YouTube Music or Spotify services already available on Android Auto. Controls are also accessible through steering wheel buttons on compatible vehicles, making it easier to keep eyes on the road.

The skip button, skips the entire video, not just 10 or 15 seconds of the current one. So, if you are mid-way through a two-hour podcast and accidentally hit skip, you are jumping to the next item in the queue, not nudging forward.

The Subscription Catch

The feature requires a YouTube Premium subscription, since it relies on background playback capability which is a function that has always been locked behind the paid tier. As a result, only users with YouTube Premium or the more affordable Premium Lite plan can use the feature.

What It Is Actually Useful For?

Long-form content such as podcasts, interviews, lectures, and commentary videos are increasingly consumed without visuals, particularly during commutes and YouTube holds a significant catalogue that dedicated podcast apps do not always carry.

By enabling dashboard controls, YouTube is effectively adapting to this behaviour rather than trying to replicate its full app experience in the car. The change brings added convenience without compromising safety, as the car’s display stays focused on essential media information rather than video thumbnails or full interfaces.
