The Supreme Court has directed the State of Punjab not to take any coercive action against the publication of the Punjab Kesari newspaper, ordering that its printing press shall continue to function uninterruptedly while the matter remains pending before the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Passing an interim order, the court clarified that the relief granted to the newspaper’s printing press will remain in force until the High Court pronounces its judgment on the petition filed by the newspaper’s management challenging the State’s actions, and for one week thereafter to allow the parties to seek appropriate appellate remedies.
However, the Court did not extend similar relief to the newspaper group’s other commercial establishments, including its hotels, directing that status quo be maintained in respect of those entities.
The order was passed by a bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice Vipul Pancholi, following an oral mention by senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi on behalf of Punjab Kesari.
