India is on the track to become the youngest country in the world. According to an estimate, the country today has around 440 million millennials, and they comprise nearly half of the working age population. A report suggests that millennials in India are expected to spend $330 billion annually by 2020.
This generation of millennials is quite tech-savvy and lives its life online. These digital natives, with big spending power and rapid digitalization, are driving a shift in the consumption basket of the market. More than 80 per cent of millennials have a 3G/4G connection as compared to 45 per cent of internet users across India. Also, according to an estimate, 47 per cent of millennials prefer to shop online than offline. And when it comes to online shopping, millennials are characterized by their regular & frequent usage of internet on mobile phones and their search for pocket-friendly deals.
Millennials prefer online shopping for various reasons. Some of the top factors being: Convenience of buying anywhere and anytime, access to products and brands that are not available offline, option to make frequent purchases, availability of diverse & wide variety, and high discounts & lower prices. Also, millennials place significant emphasis on the value from a product or service. Their decision to buy a product is guided by the value for the money that they are spending. Monthly, a millennial spends 23 per cent of his/her expense on personal grooming and discretionary/lifestyle products.
