According to the latest media reports, the Bombay High Court has orally advised Republic TV and its editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami to refrain from using disparaging language while reporting on industrialist Anil Ambani and investigations linked to Reliance group companies.
The observations were made by Justice Milind Jadhav while hearing a defamation suit filed by Ambani, who has sought an injunction against the channel’s coverage. The court raised concerns over the use of sensational language and strong adjectives in recent broadcasts.
The judge emphasised that while media organisations have the responsibility to report news, they should avoid commentary that may be seen as excessive or personal. He noted that reporting should be carried out without using terms that could be considered offensive or defamatory.

Ambani’s legal team argued that the channel’s coverage falsely linked him to alleged financial misconduct in matters. The petition further alleged that the use of terms such as “fraud” and “scam” created a misleading impression and harmed Ambani’s reputation.
Counsel for Republic TV argued that the broadcasts fell under fair comment. However, the court expressed concern over the tone of reporting and advised restraint.
The matter has been listed for further hearing on 16 April, when the channel is expected to file its response.
