YouTube has rolled out a new timer feature aimed at helping users manage the amount of time they spend watching Shorts. According to reports, the update allows users to set a daily time limit for viewing Shorts through the app’s settings. Once the limit is reached, a pop-up appears on the screen notifying users that scrolling has been paused — though the reminder can still be dismissed.
The feature first came to light earlier this year when Android Authority spotted it in development within one of YouTube’s Android app files. The platform later confirmed that it was testing the tool as part of efforts to promote more mindful viewing.

At present, the timer feature is not linked to YouTube’s parental controls. This means parents cannot yet set time limits on how long their children spend watching Shorts. YouTube, however, has said that parental control integration will be added next year. Once introduced, children will not be able to dismiss the pop-up reminders.
The new addition is part of YouTube’s broader initiative to prevent excessive screen time among its users.
