  • The advertising industry commemorates April 9 as the birthday of Piyush Pandey, a pivotal figure in Indian advertising, who passed away on October 23, 2025, from pneumonia complications.
  • Pandey joined Ogilvy in 1982 and transformed the advertising landscape in India, creating iconic campaigns such as Cadbury Dairy Milk's 'Kuch Khaas Hai Zindagi Mein' and Vodafone's ZooZoo characters.
  • Known as the "Godfather of Indian Advertising," he received prestigious awards, including the Padma Shri and the Cannes Lions' Lion of St. Mark, while emphasizing creativity rooted in emotion and originality.
  • Despite his significant contributions, Pandey remained humble and cautioned young creatives against prioritizing trends over authentic storytelling.

The advertising industry has a quiet tradition of its own, every year on April 9, it gathers to celebrate the birthday of the man who gave Indian advertising its soul. And this year, for the first time, that celebration carries the weight of absence. Had he been with us today, Piyush Pandey would have turned another year older.

Pandey’s passing away on October 23, 2025 from complications of pneumonia left friends, family, and colleagues across the advertising world heartbroken. But if there is one thing Pandey taught the industry, it is that the best stories do not end, they simply find new ways to live on.

He joined Ogilvy in 1982 after brief stints as a cricketer, tea taster, and construction worker, and at 27, entered an ad world dominated by English, and changed it forever. His portfolio reads like a cultural almanac of modern India: 'Kuch Khaas Hai Zindagi Mein' for Cadbury Dairy Milk, Asian Paints' 'Har Ghar Kuch Kehta Hai', the ZooZoo characters for Vodafone, and the 'Do Boond Zindagi Ke' Polio Abhiyaan. These were not merely advertisements. They were moments in the lives of ordinary Indians.

Often hailed as the "Godfather of Indian Advertising," he earned the Padma Shri from the Government of India and the Cannes Lions' Lion of St. Mark, received alongside his brother, filmmaker Prasoon Pandey. Despite his fame, he remained self-effacing, championing creativity rooted in emotion and truth, and warning young creatives against chasing trends at the cost of originality.

Though records place Piyush Pandey's date of birth on September 5, 1955, it is April 9 that the fraternity has always claimed as his day.
